Discover Things You Never Knew About Packaging Design

Not many people are aware of the many steps and processes that go into packaging design. For example, have you noticed that each box you open has a different method of opening and closing? That is a result of the design of the package.

Packaging designers are responsible for the creating the mechanics of the pack. They will first look at the product to be packaged, particularly its size and weight. These factors often determine the material used, as well as the way the packaging works. If the product is perishable, it may need special packaging to preserve it better. These factors will generally lead the designer to choose a specific material for his design.

A good designer will know what materials are available for him to use in his designs, what those materials are good for, and how to explain to his client why he has chosen the specific material he wants to use. Sometimes, a packaging designer will work with the manufacturer's advertising agency so that the pack fits in with the advertising parameters as well.

The size and shape of the pack will be decided, and then the designer must work out the mechanics of the pack. This includes how the lid will work, whether it will have a double seal, a handle, or a pull tab. Boxes are folded in a very specific way to maximise protection of the contents, but still make it easy to open and close the box. The position of the opening is designed to make sure the contents cannot fall out easily, as well as for convenience.

A sample or mock-up of the pack is then produced, sometimes but not always out of the material to be used. This sample is approved by the manufacturer and possibly by their advertising people as well. Once approved, the packaging designer can prepare to hand the project over to the packaging manufacturer.

The sample will also be used to establish a cost estimate for the manufacture of the pack. Packaging manufacturers tend to specialize in a particular type of packaging. Depending on the design, the manufacturer may need new equipment or molds in order to produce the pack. At this stage a timing schedule is usually drawn up too.

When the cost estimate is approved, the designer will provide the necessary documentation in order for production to begin. If the graphic design is being printed directly onto the pack, as with some plastics, the advertising agency or graphic designer will have to supply the artwork as well. When the artwork is ready and the necessary manufacturing equipment geared, the pack can go into production.

Packaging manufacturers will make the bottles, printers will print labels and boxes, and finally the packaging is delivered to the product manufacturer to be filled in the manufacturing process. There are different suppliers for labels, plastic bags and boxes, and all the necessary elements must be timed so that production is ready on time. The last step is where the manufacturer delivers his product to stores, where you buy the fruits of packaging design every day.

When you're looking at packaging materials, you might find a box design that you love. Packing and shipping is more sophisticated and decorative than it used to be.
